The late Terence Cardinal Cooke and a group of prominent New York executives from many religious backgrounds founded Inner-City Scholarship Fund (ICSF) in 1971. They realized that the high-performing inner-city schools run under the auspices of the Archdiocese of New York would not be able to keep their doors open to thousands of the city's children without immediate financial help, not only for the schools themselves, but also for the students.
Today ICSF provides funding to 86 elementary and 21 secondary schools in some of the poorest neighborhoods in Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island. This support has helped ICSF schools increase the number of enrichment programs available to students, expand the accessibility to new technology in their classrooms, complete vital capital repairs in aging buildings, and most importantly, keep tuition low so that more deserving boys and girls can attend our schools.
These schools provide an atmosphere in which children not only can learn and grow under the tutelage of caring and dedicated teachers, but can also go on to pursue higher education. The rigor and quality of a Catholic school education prepares the students to build better lives for themselves, and improves the social fabric and vitality of our community. Our graduates form the bedrock of our city and can be found in all professions and sectors.
